| Dixon murder suspect enters plea to assault with deadly weapon charge

A Vacaville man accused of fatally shooting a Dixon teenager two years ago was back in court Wednesday, where he was arraigned on an assault with a deadly weapon charge.

Raul Gutierrez-Ayar, 19, pleaded not guilty to the charge. He also faces a murder charge.

Gutierrez-Ayar, who was 16 at the time of the shooting, allegedly gunned down 17-year-old Charlie Moore Jr. April 17, 2015, at Dixon’s Northwest Park. The defendant and victim were slated to fight at the park that day, per court discussions.

The confrontation never turned physical, however, as after words were exchanged, Gutierrez-Ayar shot Moore roughly five times before pointing his gun at the individuals behind Moore and shooting at them.

No one else was injured, police confirmed.

Gutierrez-Ayar’s defense counsel has insisted he shot Moore out of self-defense, and that it was Moore who sought the defendant. Gutierrez-Ayar will be back in court Jan. 12 in Department 2 for a readiness conference and trial setting.

He remains jailed without bail.
