| Will C. Wood High School's new field, track is behind schedule
The long-awaited construction of Will C. Wood High School’s new synthetic field and track won’t be finished by the anticipated Feb. 1 completion date.
Wednesday, Vacaville Unified School District Director of Facilities Dan Banowetz and Will C. Wood High School boys soccer coach Jorge Ruiz-Chavez confirmed that the $16 million project is behind schedule.
Although Banowetz was unable to provide a specific date regarding the completion of the field and the palatial stadium, he expects to have additional information once he sits down with Alten Construction President Bob Alten early next week.
“There has been a discussion but no date has been set,” Banowetz said. “We were always pushing for February, in the hopes of being ready for track and field because practice starts Feb. 1. But we have a little play because the first track event won’t take place until March.”
The recent and projected rainfall has been a cause for concern but it’s too early to tell how much that could impact the potential completion date.
“If we have a normal rain season we should be fine,” Banowetz said. “But if we have a rainy season like we did last year, then we would focus on being ready for graduation. … We knew it wouldn’t be available for soccer but wanted to be aggressive and prepare for track.”
The amphitheater-style bleacher seating for a 4,000 person capacity crowd is being installed and the synthetic turf track and field are expected to be laid out later this month.
Wood Principal Adam Rich has been looking forward to opening the new facility, well before construction began in May.
While he admitted to knowing little about the details, Rich was aware of next week’s meeting and is confident that any changes won’t be something they can’t handle.
“If we have to make a contingency plan, we have plenty of resources and a lot of support from the city,” Rich said. “When the Vacaville High tennis courts were getting redone last year, we all had to find another tennis court to practice on. But we’ll cross that bridge when we come to it.”
